It is an American health insurance company which was founded in the 1940s, before 2014 the company was known as WellPoint, Inc. It is one of the largest for-profit managed health care company in the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association. It was being formed when Anthem Insurance Company acquired WellPoint Health Networks, Inc., while with the combined company adopting the name WellPoint, Inc.; trading on the NYSE for the joint company began under the WLP symbol on December 1, 2004. On December 3, 2014, WellPoint altered its corporate name to Anthem Inc., and its NYSE ticker altered from WLP to ANTM. Anthem Insurance Company raised out of two Indianapolis, Indiana based joint insurance companies, Mutual Hospital Insurance Inc. and Mutual Medical Insurance Inc. formed in 1944 and 1946.

The companies grew meaningfully, governing 80% of the medical insurance marketplace in Indiana by the 1970s. In 1972 they came together to generate a combined functioning agreement, and merged in 1985 as parent company, Associated Insurance Companies, Inc, to form Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Indiana. For the fiscal year 2017, Anthem stated earnings of US$3.843 billion, with a yearly revenue of US$90.039 billion, an growth of 6.1% over the prior fiscal cycle. Anthem’s shares traded at over $183 per share, and its marketplace capitalization was esteemed at over US$69.1 billion in October 2018.As of 2018, Anthem is graded 29 on the Fortune 500 rankings of the major United States corporations by total revenue.
