Aldi is a common brand for a chain of supermarkets that is owned by two German families. They have over 10,000 stores in 20 different countries and it is estimated that the overall turnover of this brand is about £ 50 billion. The brand Aldi was founded on 10th July 1946 by two brothers as they took over their family stored which was previously owned by their mother. And then the business was split into two units in 1960, namely Aldi Nord that had its headquarters at Essen and Aldi Sud that had its headquarters at Mulheim. In 1966 these two units in Germany were legally as well as financially separated.
Talking about the German operations of Aldi, for Aldi Nord it has about 35 different regional companies with around 2500 stores that are located all over in Eastern, western and Northern Germany. Talking about Aldi Sud, its operations are spread mainly over Western and Southern Germany with around 32 regional companies along with 1600 stores. Talking on an international basis, the operations of Aldi Nord is spread throughout in France, Denmark, the Benelux countries, Spain, Poland and Portugal. While the operations of Aldi Sud is spread throughout in Ireland, Switzerland, great Britain, Hungary, Australia, Austria, Italy, China and Slovenia.
