On July 27, 1994, Signet Financial Corp announced the credit card division named OakStone Financial to be led by Richard Fairbank as the CEO. This company was then spun-off on October 1994 as Capital One. Then, on February 28, 1995, Capital One was made fully independent. It then commenced operations in Canada in 1996.

During that time, Capital One generated its revenue only from selling Credit Cards. Capital One attributed its success as a monoline to the use of data collection to build demographic profiles that allowed it to give personalized offers of credit directly to their consumers.

Currently, Capital One is the 4th largest bank auto lender, with a market share of 4.2% in 2016. It is ranked 11th on the list of largest banks in the United States by assets. The bank has 755 branches including 30 café style locations and 2,000 ATMs. It is ranked 101st on the Fortune 500, 17th on Fortune’s 100 Best companies to work for list, and conducts businesses in United States, Canada and the United Kingdom
